An almost psychotherapeutic dynamic can arise when reflecting on formats, such as surveys and letters, as a way of (female) self-exploration. What happens when the private and intimate is negotiated in order to create generic moments? How does it help to go beyond the naïve notion of a conversation after all? And what follows after weighing up when to probe deeper, when to interrupt and when to keep silent? It is crucial to have a set of questions, which provoke sets of profound differences of opinion, and best of all, ignites discussion about one’s own underlying assumptions. All levels aim to develop a reflexive conversational form, which would resist the desire for “liveliness” and the supposed authenticity of the spoken word versus the written. At the same time this form would turn ‘text’ into a format in which a “third thing” could come about – something unpredictable, something more visual. The re-contextualization of the intuitive and personal combines polemical autobiography and narrative, especially when speaking about gender roles in the art and the academic world, but also about (self-)care and wellbeing. Always with a sense of self-humor. Personal experiences become objects of artistic work, without ever being fully rendered as fiction. In this way, a network of references arises, and something entailing a reflection on the relationship of the ‘visual’ and ‘text’ as part of a critical inquiry into the canonized forms of the narrative.
